While tinkering I recently borked the partitions on my C720 and needed to do a complete reimage. I had my recovery flash drive but could not force my Chromebook into recovery mode. For whatever reason, this technique wasn't completely clear on Google's support page.
Plug in your recovery device
Turn on the Chromebook but do not sign in
Press and hold the "esc" "refresh" and "power" buttons until the screen goes black.
Release the power button and continue to hold "esc" and "refresh" until the recovery screen appears.
Follow the prompts from there!
